Changing System Sounds, Windows 95
You are in complete control over the sounds that Windows 95 plays for different system events, such as the Startup and Shutdown sounds, the little chord that's played when your systems encounter an error, or the "dink" you hear when the system doesn't accept your input. The standard sounds are part of what is known as the "Default Sound Scheme." You can change these sounds easily to any WAV file on your system, or completely change the scheme that's used. Here's how.
To change a system sound:
1 - Click Start
2 - Select Settings, then Control Panel
3 - Double click on the Sounds icon
4 - Scroll the list of events until you find the event you want to change the sound for
5 - Left click on that event to highlight it
6 - Click the Browse button to search for other .WAV files you'd like to use for an event
7 - When you find a .WAV you'd like to use, double click on its name8 - You can then click on the little right-pointing arrow to hear a sample of the sound
9 - Click the OK button
To change the overall sound scheme:
1 - Click Start
2 - Select Settings, then Control Panel
3 - Double click on the Sounds icon
4 - Click the "Scheme" drop down menu and select a new scheme.
5 - Click the "Apply" button to make the change permanent
6 - Click the OK button
Note: If you don't see any sounds schemes listed in the Sound Scheme drop down menu, you can always install them. Here's how:
1 - Click Start
2 - Select Settings, then Control Panel
3 - Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon
4 - Select the "Windows Setup" Tab
5 - Highlight the "Multimedia" item in the list box, then click the "Details" button
6 - Check the "Multimedia Sound Schemes" option
7 - Click the OK button in this screen and the previous screen
8 - Windows 95 will install the files needed to give you additional sound schemes
